Not at all. What I am saying is that each believer will be convicted of whatever the Holy Spirit deems a sin for that person. That said, we are to be mindful of those around us when we do those things which are not sins for us but may be stumbling blocks for others. While I had no problem with smoking it really hindered my wife. As for mis using or adding to, my point with those verses was that the believers walk is not a prim rose path, it requires constant awareness to avoid accidentally placing stumbling blocks unaware.
None of those verse say, "don't smoke." I think it's dangerous for you to add to Scripture while trying to make American culture dictate what a sin is. Are you equating quitting smoking with entering Heaven?
Matthew 7:13,14 Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it." Luke 13:24 Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able." I haven't studied our Christian liberty yet and what it allows if anything from a carnality standpoint but I do know the above verses inform me that the way is difficult and to strive to enter. I do know nothing of a carnal nature will be allowed on that day. I was a smoker from the age of around 19 until just over a year ago, I'll be 51 come Feb 08. If a person will ask, seek and knock after God they will find liberty.
"You may be presenting yourself as a stumbling block for someone who is troubled and searching for answers in their life and if they see someone who they beleive to be a Christian and that person is smoking, they may relate that to being a hipocrite." In this scenario, don't you think that the seeker would be better seved to hear about what Christian liberty is, or better to allow them to continue down the path of believing that following Christ means following a set of rules?
Saint, Thank you for posting this question. I do not believe that smoking is a sin, BUT, I do believe that you are not being true to the ideal that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and that you should treat it as so. Smoking is very harmful to your body and to others around you. You need to think about smoking from this perspective. Smoking is also connected in most persons eyes as something that is not Christian or Church related. Therefore you may be presenting yourself as a stumbling block for someone who is troubled and searching for answers in their life and if they see someone who they believe to be a Christian and that person is smoking, they may relate that to being a hypocrite. Something for you to think about. God Bless you.
