It's absolutely clear that what you say is true.
In the first instance it says "the messenger of the covenant, whom you look for so eagerly, is surely coming..." In other words, this is someone who will be eagerly awaited.
In the second instance it says, "Before the great and dreadful day of the Lord arrives ..." That doesn't sound like something to be eagerly anticipated.
Rev. speaks of the two prophets who will speak from the Temple steps during the Tribulation ... THAT is when Elijah will come.

MALCHI 3 STATES I WILL SEND MY MESSENGER AND HE SHALL PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD WHICH IS JOHN THE BAPTIST ((HE IS TO PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD WHICH IS THE FIRST COMING OF CHRIST THEN IN MALACHI 4:5 IT SAYS BEHOLD, I WILL SEND ELIJAH THE PROPHET BEFORE THE COMING OF THE GREAT AND DREADFUL DAY OF THE LORD WHICH IS THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST IN THE FORM OF THE HOLLY SPIRIT
I KNOW MANY SAY ITS JOHN THE BAPTIST BUT THATS NOT RIGHT HE FORRAN THE FIRST COMING I BELEIVE WE HAVE TO HAVE A PROPHET COME TO FORRUN THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST BEFORE THE THIRD COMING WHICH I BELEIVE TO BE THE RAPTURING OF THE BRIDE CAN SOMEONE PLEASE INPUT ON THIS THANK YOUconfused
